
The revised programme of study for languages states:
"The curriculum should provide opportunities for pupils to ... hear, speak, read and write in the target language regularly and frequently within the classroom and beyond." The explanatory note for 'beyond' adds: "This could include using websites, taking part in special days and events, school visits abroad, and exchanges and links with schools abroad."
Language departments have a strong tradition of providing learning experiences outside the classroom. The new curriculum brings an opportunity to look again at ways this might be done so that learning is maximised and as many pupils as possible can benefit.
